Modifications of my Film Poster based on the feedback given

POINTS IMPROVES ON BASED ON THE FEEDBACK
  • The titling and typography used is too basic and needs to stand out more. As you can see, I have changed my type on my poster for the names, tagline and the film ratings. I have done this to reflect the tone of the poster I used 'the Candy font on Serif Draw Plus. This type is less basic and less harsh like the others and is a bit more feminine to not only attract a female audience but to depict that the film is for a young audience and I feel that this type is playful almost, and is right for my Drama genre.
  • This is a rough edit as I have not finished entirely as there is space to fill but I removed the credits from the head and left it to be central and an iconic image of the trailer. I have made the poster a bit smaller to leave some white space to give the credits it's own space. To do this I re-sized the image and the layers to fit in to a smaller A5 type prototype of the A4 poster film and manually refined all the sizes of the poster and type, even the silhouette, which holds the most attention as it is black against my pastel background and through the manual use of the opacity tool I made the image more transparent to suggest that the character is fading away.
  • Too much unused space present in the Poster and I need to work on my positioning.  I have reduced the waste of space by increasing the size of the film title and the names above it. Furthermore, I have also re-positioned the "COMING SOON" text to position in in a more conventional and central location within the poster. Additionally, the credits have been slightly enlarged to cover the body of the poster shown rather than just blank space. To reduce the presence of blank space further, I placed a slogan which has been deliberately positioned to resemble typical film posters and I further associated the slogan with the theme of the poster of being a drama and highlighting that there will be a downfall. " Just when you thought you were on cloud 9"

Magazine Poster Drafts

Before creating my magazine covers I looked at different Like the poster I created this image in Serif Draw Plus and stuck to conventional magazine cover features such as a large masthead, cover lines and even a barcode. I noticed that famous magazine covers such as total film and empire mostly use RED as their main magazine cover scheme.
After being used to software such as Adobe Photoshop, I was quite happy for the effort I had made while using Serif Draw Plus I became happy with the result, I ended up sticking with this program to make my magazine front cover. I started by creating a document in A4 and used the whole of the page to design a successful magazine. Notice I had change the colour scheme to blue white and black to adhere to the link b between my trailer and other ancillary text. For the photograph I used a filter in SerifPhotoPlus which added an aging effect to promote the idea of desolation and sadness which is a central theme in my drama genre film.
For my photograph, I wanted my character to look drained and broken, which present a central theme of sadness across my 3 texts. I made her look intently into the camera so that readers would automatically feel a sense of sympathy for her as she looks bare and  emotional.

Magazine Post

Before I created my magazine I drew out a rough and quick plan  on publisher  of what I would like it to look like. I did this with my film post  and made storyboards for my film trailer. On the plan, which can be seen below, I positioned the magazine and taglines, main images  in conventional places to try and get the best results on my film magazine. I also added conventional things that would appear such as exclusive content etc.

Forth film poster

After the feedback of my audience on my last 3 drafts I finally included a photograph that I had taken on the day of filming and included this image in the trailer as it was effective.

After the feedback of my audience on my last 3 drafts I finally included a photograph that I had taken on the day of filming and included this image in the trailer as it was effective.

I have used Serif PhotoPlus X7 to saturate the image and blur the background. This allowed me to blacken the silhouette and start to give the picture a little more definition.

I have used Serif PhotoPlus X7 to saturate the image and blur the background. This allowed me to blacken the silhouette and start to give the picture a little more definition.

This is the poster I gained inspiration from, altough simple I still am caught in being interested in it, especially the way the silhoette has been manipulated. This really connotes the genre of the film as well, with the fragments suggesting a broken emotion and the actors names are placed above the top of the scream. The background also has some interesting patterns to it which I think is interesting.
-
The photograph is of the protagonist and is actually a scene included in my trailer, that is one of the ways that I wanted to include a link between my trailer and texts. This scene is repeated twice in my trailer, therefore holds some significance. A high angle close shot which normally significant in drama genre theme films, to make the character central and identify emotion, I wanted to reflect the 'Head in the clouds idea in my film.

I used Serif PhotoPlus X7 to blacken the character against the cloudy background. This would enable her to stand out and still include enigma as audiences are still wondering who she may be. The blacked image came from the Precious poster, in which the main character has been made a silhouette of and has fragments going through to connote the damage and brokenness left in her. The drama film gave me an idea to silhouette my image and make my character hidden against the text,l background and clouds to connote her lost mind. I still stuck to my colour scheme as I changed most of the text white and to infer some interest I put my text in the silhouette of the poster. Black and white also compliment each other so I thought this was an interesting idea.

I added the artificial clouds still, but after some thought I'm thinking to remove some as too much
is going on in the poster, I need a sole focus. The June 2016 is smaller as I felt it took up a lot of the poster and attention. I still need to work on my com positioning and I am yet to work on the poster a lot more. I also have moved the actors names to the top of the poster to fill the space and this is conventional in posters, I still need to find a place for my tagline as well.

For the final poster, I have used only the main actress image and included this in my final poster, which is featured at the top of the poster, after looking at some existing film posters, I noticed not all characters are mentioned, even famous actors because audiences mostly recognize them from the image on the poster. However as mine is a silhouette in the poster, I included the name of the actress featuring. In my trailer, she is the only main actress featured in however I added names of other characters, to create enigma and a sense of surprise, so the audience will have to watch the actual film to see. With films, people are more likely to research characters so that they can see what other films they have been in etc. Using serif Photoplus X7 I blacked my image and lowered the opacity in Draw plus to create a transparent look, trying to inflict the idea of the soul and an emotional theme. The white, letters for the type stand out and reflect my cloud like background, which is similar to  posters such as The Fault in Our Stars’ and I feel that this stands out – as you can see, I have also made the title larger than other text and a different font so it stands out. I initially tested a range of fonts, colors and sizing that reflect drama such as pastel colors like blue browns and pinks, however I thought it was hard to adhere to the background of my poster which is blue so I stuck to white. The image holds some symbolism such as the clouds in the background which makes reference to the quote about cloud nine. Many posters of feature films such as Captain America, Star Wars and The Hunger Games etc. normally use a quote at the top of their poster from critics, in the hopes that audiences know what to expect. Mostly there are star ratings which are almost always 4 or 5. I used the 'The Evening Standard' which describes the trailer as 'Visually Striking' and I placed that above the title and had striking in bold to show the effect it will have on audiences. I believed that this would be a good idea in terms of promotion for the film.  I thought having a small, effective quote from the with 5 stars would wind an audience, who want to be touched emotionally in. I had to specifically make reference to my cloud background so I played on the image and wrote the quote just when you thought you were on cloud 9. Therefore I thought including this in my poster will be effective, and perhaps gives the audience a little indicator to what the short film entails. The title is one of the most important aspects of the poster, the style of it and where it is placed is one of the most important things, people spot when reading it. They need to remember it. I have followed the theme of creating an interesting title, I used cooltext.com and edited it to my specification to create a feminine style and touch my target audience of young females above 12 and under 21. I took to placing the title about a 2/4 of the poster and even made it stand out from the rest.  Doing this makes the title very interesting which is important as this will allow the audience to research it on the internet or remember the look of it and start to talk about it. I also put it in white, so it kept consistent with the other text on the page, and also because this is the colour that most stands out from the page and suits the cloud theme.

Magazine Covers

Empire Magazine Analysis

This magazine cover is from popular British film
company Empire. This magazine is aimed at an audience of young adults with exceptions of elders, as the Star Wars franchise has been around for decades.

When looking at this magazine cover the first thing I notice is the main image and focal point the iconic light saber and character Kylo Ren from the iconic Star Wars franchise, this is automatically the main selling point of the magazine. As an audience we receive direct informed contact with the magazine.

Next, I identify the Masthead, that is made almost central, it stands out and is essential to the page. The colour of the magazine title is red which is in line with the image of the magazine and helps with the promotion. Most of the image is dark with the exception of the light saber, iconic and noticeable in this magazine, the only other thing that is red is the mast head which gains attention from readers. Being an iconic cover, we still identify the magazine title as EMPIRE even though the feature image covers it, as it is popular, we are familiarized with the title, as it is a well known film magazine and how it adheres to popular film releases.

This magazine fits conventions of typical magazines, let alone films. Dates, issue number and taglines are included. Even though, the issue of this film is to promote the Star Wars release, it doesn't fail to include other films that are set to be released during the same time of Star Wars. These films are placed on the top of the magazine in white and above the masthead, meaning they hold a certain amount of importance and readers should be enticed to view this in cinemas. The size of the type shows that the films aren't as important as Star Wars, because the type of star wars is written in white but march large and in terms of the rule of thirds, it takes up 1/3 of the lower magazine. When editing my magazine. I will take this into account and include other films that are relevant, so that I can completely meet the conventions of a film magazine. Other films, need to be promoted, the main image of the magazine just needs to be made most important. With reference, to dates, issue number and taglines are noticeable minute sized on the page. This is in order to stop readers from being distracted but also essential to the conventions of the magazine.

The lower third of the page has the title, which includes the title of the film in white, against the dark background helps it stands out.

The fandom of Star Wars, have been captivated even more by the 'Amazing fold-out collector's cover.' Including a collectable in a magazine cover helps promote films even more, everybody loves freebies. The fan's of the Star Wars franchise may be even more excited about the release and the fact there is something else they can gain to help with their anticipation of the films set release.

Rough Draft of Film Poster Update (Images included)

To break up the solid white background and make it look less bore and plain I added clouds. I couldn’t decide whether to change the background to an actual image or include illustrations. In the end I went with image and stuck with my clouds theme. I googled clouds online and went to Serif Photo Plus X7 to manipulate my image a bit, to do this I blurred the clouds somewhat and got rid of the blue background. I then imported the finished image into my poster and continued to stick to my original layout but added the clouds to behind the text. I chose clouds because it symbolizes my theme of thoughts and relates to my tagline. 'Just when you thought you were on cloud 9.' or 'Lost with our head in the clouds' White also connotes purity and I wanted to reflect the drama genre theme I had, which normally include pastel and white colors. This background reflected my head in the clouds scene, at the beginning and end in my trailer, it has become symbolic. I am still in room for improvement for my poster, and I aim to re size text, include text, cover the space in the top third and also add a photograph. All my text are in the second and third positions of the poster.

Rough Draft of Film Poster -Text Only

This is my rough draft of my first film poster. It was created through Serif Draw Plus X6. This software caused me to play around a bit, as it was my first time using and creating a piece from it. At this point, the poster is a rough draft and only features typography on it.

- For the layout, I used a simple A4 pastel blue background. I chose this colour for my background as it is simple, feminine and delicate and this was the theme, I wanted to infer to my audience. I also wanted to refer to the season I would be releasing the 'film' which is early June, so I hoped the colour would give off that summertime feeling. Lastly, the colour I used suggests a sky, in which a skyline is featured in my trailer. This creates a link between the poster and trailer and I believed the audience would begin  become familiar with my products.
- The type of film poster I'm going to aim for is the main theatrical type, including pictures, release dates and production personnel. I will also include stars, rating a tagline and possibly the names of characters. The social media sites will also be included, to promote my film and attract a young target audience.

- To get that handwritten like texture and font, I used a site called 'cooltext.com' and after playing around, I discovered a text that was quite formal and struck out to me. I then exported the type and imported it into the software. The text was called super scripted and I made the colour a white grey to fit my 'skyline' theme. The fonts of the names, the production personnel and the release date were all from Serif DrawPlus. The font of the names and the release date is called 'Agency FB' I re sized certain words and enlarged some to make it look as realistic to real film posters.

- Finally, I worked by the rule of thirds to present the positioning of the image. Of course I made my title central, so that this would be the first thing my audience see. I then added my main actors underneath, to give them some significance.

After showing this to my audience, I received some points for improvement and bits that went well. That I aim to act on and make a difference

Titling and Idents

I made some interesting titling to fill in the spaces of my

trailer. I used a paper image (which is scrunched) scrunched

paper is mostly associated in schools when students give up

and I wanted to infer this to my target audience, that this is a

young peoples film and it is for them. For this I included a

range of colors and typical trailer typography.

Used Serif Draw Plus to edit my title name in.

Used the paper background and included film rating , and logos as well as social media links

Tag line to interest the audience.

Influenced by the fault in our stars and add more into my scene and creates a sense of familiarity with audience.
