Magazine Covers

Empire Magazine Analysis

This magazine cover is from popular British film
company Empire. This magazine is aimed at an audience of young adults with exceptions of elders, as the Star Wars franchise has been around for decades.

When looking at this magazine cover the first thing I notice is the main image and focal point the iconic light saber and character Kylo Ren from the iconic Star Wars franchise, this is automatically the main selling point of the magazine. As an audience we receive direct informed contact with the magazine.

Next, I identify the Masthead, that is made almost central, it stands out and is essential to the page. The colour of the magazine title is red which is in line with the image of the magazine and helps with the promotion. Most of the image is dark with the exception of the light saber, iconic and noticeable in this magazine, the only other thing that is red is the mast head which gains attention from readers. Being an iconic cover, we still identify the magazine title as EMPIRE even though the feature image covers it, as it is popular, we are familiarized with the title, as it is a well known film magazine and how it adheres to popular film releases.

This magazine fits conventions of typical magazines, let alone films. Dates, issue number and taglines are included. Even though, the issue of this film is to promote the Star Wars release, it doesn't fail to include other films that are set to be released during the same time of Star Wars. These films are placed on the top of the magazine in white and above the masthead, meaning they hold a certain amount of importance and readers should be enticed to view this in cinemas. The size of the type shows that the films aren't as important as Star Wars, because the type of star wars is written in white but march large and in terms of the rule of thirds, it takes up 1/3 of the lower magazine. When editing my magazine. I will take this into account and include other films that are relevant, so that I can completely meet the conventions of a film magazine. Other films, need to be promoted, the main image of the magazine just needs to be made most important. With reference, to dates, issue number and taglines are noticeable minute sized on the page. This is in order to stop readers from being distracted but also essential to the conventions of the magazine.

The lower third of the page has the title, which includes the title of the film in white, against the dark background helps it stands out.

The fandom of Star Wars, have been captivated even more by the 'Amazing fold-out collector's cover.' Including a collectable in a magazine cover helps promote films even more, everybody loves freebies. The fan's of the Star Wars franchise may be even more excited about the release and the fact there is something else they can gain to help with their anticipation of the films set release.
